MUSIC: Ahmerdy - Yar Arewa

Kano’s Afrobeat talent Ahmerdy delivers a heartfelt celebration of Northern beauty with his 2022 single “Yar Arewa.” Released January 3, 2022, this 3:12-minute anthem draws on the artist’s deep cultural roots, fusing pop sensibilities with a powerful sense of Hausa identity.

The title Yar Arewa means “Northern Girl,” and the lyrics showcase poetic admiration:
“Masoyiya na dani… Yarinyan da tarbiya… Gata da kyau, gata yar Arewa”
lines that highlight cultural pride, grace, and love. Over a warm mid-tempo beat infused with Afro-pop flair, Ahmerdy’s voice carries both devotion and regional pride in the smooth chorus.

Ahmerdy has been steadily building his presence since his breakthrough in 2021, gaining recognition as a modern voice of Hausa Afro-pop. While tracks like “Kallabi,” “Aure,” and “Amarya” helped pave the way, Yar Arewa stands out for its cultural resonance, anthemic enough for weddings, compilation playlists, and everyday celebration of Arewa heritage.

The single also rose on streaming platforms like Qobuz, where it’s praised for its blend of high-quality production and strong regional flavor. Its popularity among Hausa communities is clear: the song’s lyrics have become a go-to sing-along, with users on TikTok and community forums celebrating and sharing their own renditions.

Stream “Yar Arewa” now on Qobuz, Spotify, YouTube, or Audiomack, also available here to stream on Hausatunes24 to celebrate the spirit of the Northern girl.
